Beach Tournament 2004

Family Stand (Croydon) - WINNERS

This years beach tournament took place on Saturday 14th August with 14 teams competing from as far afield as Cambridge and Rotterdam. With torrential rain the day before it was looking like our luck on the weather was finally going to run out this year and it looked like the late sacrifice of two goats and a chicken on Friday night by our very own Weather Witch was going to be to no avail.

Arriving at a windswept overcast beach at 7.45am to start the pre tournament rituals of 'The Greasing of the Poles' and 'The Raking of the Stones' hopes for sun were not high. However as the first games got started and folk started trying to run on the sand we were grateful for the more comfortable temperatures after last years 30C heat. and

As the pools progressed it became clear that the title this year was likely to go to one of Supernova, Erasmus, Pow Wow Badgers or Family Stand. The Sandwich teams, Deckchair Divas and Mussels Galore were experiencing mixed fortunes, with the Divas securing some good results to take them up the table while the Mussels struggled to get into their rhythm.

Highlight of the morning for Sandwich came from Tracey. After Karl scored an own goal earlier in the tournament season it was commented that this was a rare sight that very few people have seen before - well Tracey bettered that spectacularly as she scored not one, but two own goals in two matches, to promptly be banished back to manning the tournament gazebo where she could do far less damage!

Erasmus vs Croydon

As lunchtime came the sun finally arrived, a little later than ordered, and the rest of the day was played out under cloudless blue skies. The afternoon crossover matches saw the traditional last place play off involving one Sandwich team. In a tight match Mussels Galore finished level with West London, the London side winning the penalty shoot-out to leave Sandwich to add another spoon to the collection!

The final was contested between Supernova and Family Stand from Croydon. Supernova took an early lead, but Family Stand soon pulled back strongly, managing to maintain the level of their performance over the full 24 minutes of the match. This allowed them to run out 9 - 4 winners and take the trophy.

THE FINAL - Family Stand vs Supernova

So the final placings were 1st - Family Stand, 2nd - Supernova, 3rd - Erasmus, 4th Pow Wow Badgers 1
